XLabel introduces a variety of new features previously unknown to label printing software:

For the first time in label printing software: Native unicode support for multiscript labels; mix english, russian, japanese or any other language on a single label or even in a single text object. Will also import unicode databases / text files via ODBC or unicode text over the clipboard. XLabel will also convert imported non-unicode text to unicode with support for over 100 international codepages.
For the first time in label printing software: Completely XML based. All label designs, format definitions and user defined components are stored as XML files, enabling the user to view and edit label designs with any XML enabled software, like browsers, editors etc. It's even possible to create label designs on the fly using Visual Basic or other programming environments. Using XML as a foundation will also guarantee cross platform file compatibility with upcoming versions of XLabel for Linux and Mac OS X. This capability is mandatory if you want to distribute label designs across a multi platform environment.
For the first time in label printing software: Design module that lets you organize your designs in layers. Layers are a well known feature known from programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. Here they allow you to create labels with contents in different languages and designs. Layers can be locked against inadvertent changes and marked as non-printing. Layers are also great to put guidelines or boxes on them that indicate areas that must be kept free from other objects, e.g. if you are using pre printed labels.
For the first time in label printing software: Design module that supports transparency in graphic primitives (boxes, circles etc.) and images (GIF, PNG, TIFF formats).
For the first time in label printing software: No need to reinvent the wheel. XLabel's cloning capability lets you easily reuse design components and even entire labels. Simply select "Clone existing" when creating a new label or layer and you have a foundation to work with.

Label formats

Comes with 2000+ predefined label formats for ink jet, laser and label printers. Manufacturers are Zweckform, Brady, Tyco, Avery etc.
The repository of predefined formats is constantly updated. New formats will be made available for free download on our website.
User defined labels can be created from scratch or by modifying an existing formats.
The label format is always saved as part of the label design so it's easy to transfer label designs from one computer to the other, even across different operating systems.

Editing

Supports a variety of basic primitives like lines, circles, boxes etc. All elements can have individual fill and stroke color as well as stroke width.
Supports rich text editing, allowing multiple styles, fonts or colors within a single text element.
Text editing couldn't be simpler: Select the Text tool from the tool palette, click into the label and start typing.
Supports all input methods for unicode (IME).
All elements can be positioned with the mouse, with the cursor keys or by entering the exact coordinates to 1/100 mm, leading to maximum precision.
All elements can be rotated freely by entering the exact angle to 1/100 degree precision.
Graphic primitives can be assigned a transparency value from 0 (invisible) to 100 (opaque).
Objects can be grouped and aligned on the label as well as centered.
The sequence of objects on the label can be changed, i.e. it's possible to put one object in front of another.
Imports all relevant image formats: JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, PNG, WMF, EMF etc. Metafiles are imported as such, i.e. they are treated as resolution independent graphics, resulting in the best possible output quality.
Supports transparency in images (only for formats that support transparency, currently: TIF, GIF, PNG).
Organize your design in layers for maximum flexibility. Create multi-language labels by grouping language-specific data or text on a separate layer for each language. Layers can be marked non-printing, locked (against inadvertent change) or invisible. The order of layers as well as their name can be changed any time.
Unlimited undo / redo operation. Undo / redo buffers are assigned to the respective label, meaning that you can edit one label, select a second label and edit it, return to the first label and undo the first edit operation.
Ultra fast zoom function between 10% and 1600%, with fit to window function.
Select groups of elements and store them as components for reuse, e.g. your company logo, company name and address. On a new label design, switch to the components tab, select the component and click "Add to layer".
A real-time preview is fully integrated into the design module and allows editing the label while the calculated contents of variables and datafields are displayed.
User definable grid spacing, object snap to grid, rulers etc.
Choose between metric and imperial units. Internally XLabel stores all values at 1/100 mm precision.

Databases

Import any ODBC database: SQL Server, AS 400, dBase, Excel, Access, Plain Text etc.
Connection strings to the database are stored with the label job for easy reconnection.
Connect to multiple databases, tables at a time.
Connect to unicode datasources, e.g. Access from version 2000, or non-unicode datasources and have XLabel convert the data to unicode. Support for over 100 codepages is integrated.
Add an unlimited number of database fields to your design.
All database fields can be printed as text or barcode in one of the supported formats (see below).
Database fields can be concatenated, e.g. you can group fields for title, first name and last name together with a user selectable separator character.
All fields can also be prepended and appended with static text.
Options for datafields: User selectable precision for numeric or decimal fields, ideal for currencies / prices. User selectable formats for date fields.
Binary content can be printed using one of the binary enabled barcode symbologies (Datamatrix, PDF 417).
The contents of text fields can be interpreted as a path to an image file.
Real time preview is integrated into the design module.

Barcode support

Supports all common linear barcode symbologies: Code UPC A/E, Code EAN 8/13, Code 39, Code 39 Extended, Code 2/5 in various flavors, Code 128 with UCC / EAN 128, PZN, ISSN / ISBN / Bookland, Codabar, Postnet.
Supports the most common 2D types: Datamatrix, PDF 417.
All barcode parameters can be left at reasonable defaults or can be defined by the user: Module width, height, checksum generation, human readable text etc.
Barcode elements can also be freely rotated.
All variable content (counter, data / time fields, datafields, prompts) can be printed as barcode.

Dynamic content

XLabel supports a variety of elements for dynamic content: Counters, date fields, time fields and user prompts.
Counters can be numeric or alpha numeric, that is you can count from 0 - 9 or A - Z or a - z or a mixture of all these. Counting can be upwards or downwards with a user definable start value and step size. Numeric counters can also be padded with zeroes.
After printing the value reached with a counter is stored as its new start value. So maintaining a range of, say serial numbers, is easy.
Date fields can display the current date in short or long format or in one of over a dozen user definable custom formats, e.g. Week/Year or Year only etc.
Time fields will display the current, i.e. print, time in a variety of formats e.g. AM/PM format, 24 hour format etc.
Prompt fields prompt the user for data right before printing. User definable are the prompt text and the default content of the field if the user won't enter any data.
For ease of use prompt fields are automatically grouped into a single dialog prior to printing without the need for manually designing a dialog. Each label design can carry up to 20 prompt fields.
All variable elements can be prepended and appended with static text.
All variables (counter, date/time, and prompt) can be printed as text or barcode in one of the supported barcode formats.
A real-time preview is fully integrated into the design module and allows editing the label while the calculated contents of variables and datafields are displayed.

Printing, general

Support for all Windows printers using the manufacturer's original drivers. Thus maximum compatibility is guaranteed without the risk to depend on a third-party driver developer.
All printer settings, e.g. orientation, print quality, are stored with a job as well as the preferred printer itsself.
Adjust the print output in all directions to deal with different printer and label format margins thus minimizing wasted labels.
Start the print job on a user definable row and column of a sheet, ideal if you have already printed a couple of labels but not used the whole page.
User definable print direction: All columns then the next row or all rows then the next column.
Directly enter the number of labels to be printed or depend the number on connected database (see below).
Print module supports the OEM's printer preview if available.
All printing is documented in the job's history.
Detailed printing progress indicator that display the current job and label and the current number of labels against the total number. The print job can be cancelled any time.

Printing, databases

Connect to all common databases: Access, dBase, OleDb etc.
Advanced, yet simple to use record selection.
Select the records from a list, or enter the desired range, e.g "1-10,15" will print records #1 to #10 and #15.
The list of records will only show the fields of the table that are actually used on the label or all fields of the table.
Use and reuse SQL clauses that determine the number of labels to be printed, e.g "where supplierid = 3". XLabel will also support sophisticated SQL queries that change the order of records in the result set.
SQL clauses are stored with the label design for reproducible results.
How often do you need each record? Enter the number directly or depend it from the contents of a numeric field in the same table, a very useful feature especially for inventories etc.

Demo

An demo version is available. The demo is fully functional and will generate all supported codes. It places the word "EVAL" in light gray on each label.

For backwards compatibility with Windows 2000 XLabel does not have a dedicated option to create the new ISBN 13 barcode. Please use Barcode Blitz instead.
