Mobile Tagging Barcodes
With the advent of camera phones quite a few barcode-like schemes have sprung up. Usually that kind of codes encode a URL or a coupon code. The code is photographed with the camera phone, the barcode is decoded and the contained URL is visited in your browser; the Web 2.0 phrase for this is Mobile Tagging. The following list of code symbologies is not exhaustive, there are probably quite a few more of those barcodes around. Keep in mind that (at the time of writing) all codes below are proprietary, i.e. the specifications are not publicly available and the codes as such are not standardized by either ISO or AIM. This means that one depends entirely on the developer / proprietor of the respective code not only for code creation but also for code scanning as no maker of barcode scanners is likely to support those codes with their devices. It's a much safer bet to go with a standardized code symbology, like QR Code.
- BeeTagg -
this code doesn't even encode a URL or any other useful information; the code content as to be dereferenced first
on a server of the proprietor so a live internet connection is needed all the time.
- ShotCode - contains
up to 40 bits of data in a circular pattern which makes it suitable for omnidirectional reading, i.e. reading from an angle.
Again, the encoded information has to be dereferenced first.
-
TrillCode - a
2D matrix code that allows embedding of logos or pictures within the code.
